Life in China can be stressful for expats.  And on certain days, living overseas can feel absolutely overwhelming and confusing.  When our daily life is complicated by things like substance abuse, depression, anxiety, difficult work transitions, changes in relationships, or grief and loss, it is easy for us to begin spiraling emotionally. If your challenges living overseas are beginning to seem out of control, sometimes just having someone available to listen is helpful.  Maybe a new perspective, or a little bit of encouragement and reassurance can provide a fresh start.

In partnership with Chengmei International Medical Clinic, I am offering affordable counseling services for individuals, couples and families.  Official receipts and/or a fapiao can be provided in order to assist with insurance reimbursements. Reduced fees are sometimes made available to teachers and college students (based on monthly household income.)

Individuals in Shenzhen have two choices for receiving care:

1) visit the office for in-person sessions

2) schedule a telehealth visit (video chat or telephone)

Telehealth sessions are also available for individuals in other cities across China.  These sessions can be conducted on a variety of platforms depending on the client’s preferences.

Description of Services:

1. In-Person Sessions (offered to individuals, couples or families in Shenzhen):

These sessions are typically 50 minutes long, and occur once per week.  These meetings are intended first and foremost to provide growth or resolve difficulty in a few very specific areas of your life.  However, along the way these sessions will also foster improved mental health in a broader sense.  Our early sessions together focus on reducing the level of discomfort, gathering information, and clarifying the most important goals for our time together.  Once we have set goals, we will begin working together to meet these goals in an efficient way.  This often involves strategies and techniques drawn from cognitive and narrative therapy approaches. And lastly, we will build a plan for sustaining the growth you have made and for protecting against future difficulties.  (Couples and family sessions will involve a similar process, but with an added emphasis on how to interact in healthy ways, and how to blend our individual goals into a larger system.)

2.  Telehealth Sessions (provided online or by telephone to individuals in Shenzhen and other cities in China):

Online appointments offer the same treatment approach and care as in-person visits.  These appointments are offered on a variety of online platform based on the client’s preference.  Prominent studies in 2013 and 2017  affirmed that online counseling produces comparable and potentially even favorable results when measured against in-person counseling.  This effectiveness has been demonstrated rather impressively across a wide variety of different ages, cultures, and counseling issues.  However, clients must consider their own needs and personality to determine if online appointments might be a good fit.
For expats in China, online appointments are a fantastic opportunity to receive quality care despite limited resources for English speakers.

Counseling Approach:

Our thoughts and beliefs drive our emotions, so good therapy often starts with examining our thoughts and motivations.  Each client and situation is unique, so I prefer to use a variety of treatment approaches.  Most often, sessions include some combination of solution-focused techniques as well as cognitive, dialectical and narrative therapy approaches.
